FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS


WHAT TO BRING?


Most guests experience that they brought too much - travel light is the motto. Bring what you can fit into a normal backpack/suitcase. To save space i provide you with towels, bedding, first aid kit and diving equipment. If you forget something you can buy it here. However remember to bring insecticides, sunglasses, sunscreen and, if you need, motion sickness medicine.


HOW TO GO THERE?


You can fly from Manila or Cebu (90 minutes) to Dumaguete. You can also take a bus or ferry from Cebu (6 hour). We meet at noon in Dumaguete day one.


WHAT ABOUT INSURANCE?


You shall have some travel insurance. You can give the skipper a copy when you arrive. If you want to do diving make sure that the insurance covers for that.


WHAT ABOUT VISA AND VACCINATION?


You get 28 days free visa upon arrival. If you want to stay longer you get an extension at the immigration office. It´s advisable to get a vaccination against hepatitis B. Otherwise there is no need for extra protection.


WHAT ABOUT MALARIA AND DENGUE FEVER?


There are few a places in Philippine that have problem with those diseases. Our sailing area of Visayas is safe. In any case of events, there is no need of bringing malaria medicine with you - the local medicine works best.


WHAT ABOUT TYPHOONS?


Where we sail in the southern Visayas, typhoons are relatively rare. We are merely affected by winds and rain. The weather forecast gives us good info about the track of the typhoons so we can be prepared.


WHAT ABOUT PIRATES AND KIDNAPPERS?


There are areas in southern Mindanao where it can be problem. We simply avoid these areas altogether.


WHAT ABOUT SAFETY ABOARD AND ON LAND?


We have a VHF radio and a life raft for 8 persons. We don´t sail far from land so in case of  a health problem, care is within reach - SAFETY FIRST. In the southern Visayas you don´t have to watch over your shoulder - people are very nice and welcoming.


WHAT TO BUY IN THE PHILIPPINES?


Clothes, alcohol and tobacco are very cheap. You can also buy good handcrafts and South Sea pearls.


I HAVEN´T SAILED BEFORE IS THAT A PROBLEM?


No problem at all - you learn along the way.


DO YOU DO REGULAR CHARTER?


Not at all. I love sailing/diving with a crew of same interest and I'm fine with just sharing the costs. I don't want to make a charter business - it's a lot of work that reduce the joy. Cost share is a win-win for me and the crew. Aside from wonderful experience it's a great way to make new friends.

 

WHAT DOES A CREW MEMBER HAVE TO DO?


It´s mostly about cooking and keeping the boat clean and tidy. You don´t have to get involved in repairs or in the general maintenance of the boat - the captain takes care of it and ensures that the good ship New Moon is always shipshape.


SLEEPING ARRANGEMENT ABOARD?


There are seven berths down below and three in the cockpit under the stars.


I´M A VEGETARIAN, IS THAT A PROBLEM?


We stock up food for both meat eaters and vegetarians. I myself prefer healthy veggie food.


IS THERE INTERNET ABOARD?


There is internet aboard and the signal is mostly acceptable.


WHAT ABOUT  THE DIVING?


New Moon has complete equipment for four divers making 3 dives a day. You are of course free to bring your own equipment. 

Diving is your own responsibility. I can supply a dive guide but if you just want to dive with your dive mate it's no problem.

We have never had any diving accident - SAFETY FIRST. 


WHERE ELSE TO GO?


There are many beautiful and safe places in the Philippines worth to sailing to. If you want to go somewhere else in the Philippines - lets talk about it. If you are with a bigger group than six persons, there is a possibility to accommodate a large party with the other two boats that you can see in the video on the home page.
